Today, artificial intelligence (AI) is a topic that everyone is always talking about. AI is currently being developed to help solve difficult problems in computer science, to create robots to teach students, to help improve the job application process for human resources, and the most popular, to help improve medicine and medical technology. Expanding on the topic of medicine, now AI can help detect the symptoms of Alzheimer’s 10 years before a doctor can detect them.
Alzheimer’s is a disease in which the brain cells degenerate and eventually die with time, causing problems like memory loss and loss of brain function. Treatments do exist to help keep the disease under control, but there is no cure. It affects approximately three million people in the US and it is often seen in older people. The key to Alzheimer’s is to detect it early on to better control the symptoms, slow down the degeneration significantly, and prolong the life of the person.
According to an article written by Daily Mail, the University of Bari in Italy invented an algorithm for the MRI machines that can detect the difference in brains with Alzheimer’s and brains without Alzheimer’s. The study took 67 MRI scans, some from people with the disease and some from those without it, to teach the system how to pick out the difference between a healthy brain and one that is at risk. The article continues, saying that the AI had an 84% success rate en identifying the symptoms. The benefit of a procedure like this is that it’s more efficient and saves money in the long run.
