Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway
Birth: November 12, 1982 en Brooklyn, Nueva York, EE.UU.

Anne Jacqueline Hathaway, better known as Anne Hathaway, is a North-American actress.

Anne Hathaway was born in Brooklyn, New York (USA), on November 12, 1982. She studied Drama at the Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey and, still in high school, was nominated by Playhouse for a Rising Star Award for the state’s best school representation. Later on, she attended the Gallatin School of Individualized Study in New York. She was the first and only teenager admitted in the intensive acting programme run by the famous theatre company Barrow Group. Hathaway also studied musical theatre as part of a course affiliated to her university. Furthermore, she is an accomplished ballerina who studied at the Broadway Dance Center in NY. And, in 1998, she gave two concerts at the Carnegie Hall performing as the main soprano member of the All-Eastern US High School Honors Chorus.

Her age and height (1.73 meters) gave her trouble to get Broadway roles. She was too high to portray children and too young to portray adults. However, three days after Carnegie Hall, she got a role in the TV-series ‘Get Real’. The show only lasted one season, but the critics praised her and she got nominated for the Teen Choice Awards (2000) in the Choice TV Actress: Drama category.

Anne Hathaway made her cinema debut in 2002 with a role in the drama ‘The Other Side of Heaven’, with Christopher Gorham. But, before the movie’s release, she landed the role of Mia Thermopolis, the lead on ‘The Princess Diaries’, a PG comedy by Garry Marshall. That is how the public met her. There she worked alongside with stars like Julie Andrews (her grandmother), Héctor Helizondo (the Queen’s trusted man), and Heather Matarazzo (Mia’s best friend). Afterwards, she took part in ‘Nicholas Nickleby’, a drama based on a Dickens’ novel. The movie was a flop despite the Oscar bells ringing. The actress decided to recover her image as a children’s idol in ‘Ella Enchanted’, a new family movie. The original novel had a good acceptance, but the movie’s time on the silver screen went without a fuss. In 2004 she reprised her role as Mia Thermopolis in ‘The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement’. That was followed by ‘Hoodwinked!’ in 2005, an animation movie where she voiced a character and sang a song part of the soundtrack.

There was a moment where Anne Hathaway wanted to dissociate herself from the family movies and so followed Julie Andrew’s advice: to get away from Disney’s cliché, there was nothing better than taking off your clothes in time. In the following interviews, Hathaway started saying she would not mind a more adult role. So, also in 2005, she got her chance with ‘Havoc’, an independent movie where she portrayed a rebellious teenager socialite that wants to try something new and ends up involved in drugs and corruption. However, it was the awarded ‘Brokeback Mountain’ (Ang Lee) the one that gained the actress her reputation as such, and where she got to show her professional maturity. The following year she released ‘The Devil Wears Prada’, where she reinforced her professionalism. She gave life to Andy Sachs, a naïve girl who goes to NY to work as a personal assistant for the implacable fashion editor Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep).

In 2007 she took part in ‘Becoming Jane’, her more ambitious project to date because, for the first time, she was she had the story’s weight on her back. In this biographical drama she had to become the famous British writer, Jane Austen. To do so, she had to study the era, learn the manners, the dances and the education of that social atmosphere and learn a British accent. In 2008 she released three movies: the remake of ‘Get Smart’ (she was Agent 99), the supernatural thriller ‘Passengers’, and ‘Rachel Getting Married’. This last one secured her status as a mature actress. The Jonathan Demme (‘Silence of the Lambs’) movie earned her the first Best Actress Oscar and Golden Globes nominations.

2010 marked her return to Disney, but in a different way. She played the White Queen in Tim Burton’s ‘Alice in Wonderland’. She worked together with Johnny Depp, Alan Rickman and Helena Bonham-Carter. She also appeared on ‘Valentine’s Day’ (Garry Marshall) and ‘Love And Other Drugs’ (Edward Zwick) with Jake Gyllenhaal. A year later she co-starred in ‘One Day’ (Lone Scherfig) with Jim Sturgess. She also gave life to Catwoman, Selina Kyle, on ‘Batman: The Dark Knight Rises’ (Christopher Nolan).

In 2012 she releases ‘Les Misérables’, directed by Tom Hooper and sparring Russel Crowe and Hugh Jackman. She portrayed Fantine, role that earned her a Golden Globe, a Screen Actors Guild Award, the BAFTA and her first Oscar for an Actress in a Supporting Role. Her rendition of ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ reached Billboard’s 69 in 2013. In 2014 she voiced Jewel in the animated movie ‘Rio 2’. She also appeared on ‘Interstellar’ (Christopher Nolan) with Matthew McConaughey and Jessica Chastain.

In 2015 she joined the cast of ‘The Modern Ocean’ (Shane Carruth), with Keanu Reeves, Daniel Radcliffe and Jedd Goldblum among others. On May 2016, it is expected the release of ‘Alice Through the Looking Glass’, the sequel to ‘Alice in Wonderland’.
