Ella Maria Lani Yelich-O’Connor, better known as Lorde, is a New Zealand singer-songwriter.
Lorde was discovered in 2008 at age 12 by Scott Maclachlan, his future manager. Maclachlan saw her sing ‘Warwick Avenue’ Duffy in a talent show at his school. That same year, he signed a contract with Universal Music. Shortly after he began to compose his own songs and teamed with producer Joel Little.
In November 2012, he released his debut album, ‘The Love Club’, in SoundCloud. When the EP reached 60,000 downloads, Universal Music Group decided to release it officially. It was available on iTunes from countries like the United States and New Zealand in March 2013. In addition, debuted at number two in the main list of popularity of his native country, and entered the Billboard Top25. ‘Royals’, the first single from the album, debuted at number one in New Zealand and, weeks later, entered the Top10 of more than twenty countries including the United States. At the end of the year, it was the best-selling song by a female artist, and when you get to April 2014, had sold over five million copies. The single also won two of three Grammy Awards for which it was nominated: Song of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Performance Soloist. Lorde was 17.
Universal Music Group launched ‘Pure Heroine’, their first studio album in September 2013. It was well received both critically and commercially and by the end of the year, it had sold about one-half million copies worldwide and. The first single from the album, ‘Tennis Court’, debuted No. 1 in New Zealand and the second, ‘Team’, sold over two million copies in the United States.
The following year, Lorde recorded ‘Yellow Flicker Beat’ for the film ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1′. He was also responsible for electing the other artists who participate in the soundtrack of the film. The song gave nominations Golden Globes (Best Original Song) and the Critics’ Choice Awards (Best Song). In November of the same year it reached 17 million worldwide sales by way of singles.
